π¦ Personality
- What mythological creature would your character most like to be? Which do they identify with? Which would they dread being?
Given that V doesn't have much use for fiction and folklore so he personally has no opinion; if V knew that there were guardian black dogs, it's what he would wish to be. He would reluctantly identify with the normal black dog, but that comparison is something he also deeply dreads. The traditional black dog is often considered an omen of death or grave misfortune, and V himself feels like he is cursed to bring harm to all of those around him that he is close to. As he's moved through his life, he's left a trail of corpses in his wake; while most were those that tried to harm him or get in his way, enough people he's cared about have died that he truly believes that he's a bad omen. He's always thought of himself as a feral dog that had been kicked a few times too many and would bite any hand offered: it's behavior that he hates, but it's been habit for so long he has no clue how to change. He views himself as a curse, but all he wants is to be the protector.
- If your character could ask for one wish, and it's going to be magically granted without any consequence, what will it be and why?
V would not take the wish. No matter how much they may reassure him it's without consequence, he just wouldn't believe it. Everyone always wants something, and they will always be more than willing to lie to get it. That's just how people are and how they work. To think anything otherwise is foolish. V's childhood was that of destitution and struggle: every single thing in his life that he had he had to fight and claw for, sometimes just white knuckling to keep grip and stay alive. Any time someone looked to give him something, it always came with a price. Sometimes it was a matter of paying up, other times it was a matter of blood. If there is one thing that his life has taught him, it's that there is only one thing in this world in which he can reliably trust: himself.
- What song would a siren sing to your character to lure them closer? Why?
Mind of Mine by LΓΈ Spirit. Josh wrote this song not too long before his child was born because he truly hoped that he would be a good father to his child, and he was terrified that his mental illness and past traumas would get in the way of being able to be there and care for his child in the way that he wanted.
V isn't consciously aware of this by any means - he has far too much trauma to have the level of self-awareness needed to know - but all that V really wants out of life is to be loved, and to have a family. While he may not be aware of this as the thing he truly wants in life, he believes that he is too FUBAR to deserve or be in any relationship. He recognizes that he has a lot of maladapted, toxic behaviors that stem from all of the trauma in his life, and he recognizes that it absulutely poisons his interactions and interpersonal relationships. Relationships terrify him for numerous reasons, but mostly because he knows that he will ruin them because of his own mental illness and past trauma.
This song would resonate heavily with V, even if he wouldn't be quite able to articulate why.
- If there's one person your character would follow to another realm, who would it be and why? If there's no one, state that and explain why.
V would answer this without hesitation or a second thought: Kerry Eurodyne. After everything he'd been through, V had resigned himself to the fact that he is unlovable, and that he would die alone. He convinced himself it would be better that way: his work is dangerous, it isn't fair to trick someone into loving him and then go off on some dangerous gig and never come home. It also meant that he didn't have to be vulnerable to someone and have them use that against him, and his heart couldn't be broken if he never gave it out. He'd lost so many people he'd cared about in his life, and he no longer wanted to feel that hurt.
Finding Kerry was the complete 180 from that line of thinking: he'd finally found someone who was as much of a mess as he was, and who still cared for him. He found someone that understood who he was at his core and cut through all of the bullshit walls and barbed wire that he wrapped himself in; he found someone that cared and loved him despite his addictions and mental illness. V would do anything for Kerry, even if that included walking directly into the lowest layer of hell. If all that he wants is to be loved and to have a family, then Kerry is the first time he's felt that these are possible.
- What is your character's most outstanding personality trait, and why?
cw: suicide
Ironically, V's most outstanding personality trait is his capacity and ability to keep hope. He has been met with difficulty in every single aspect of his life, every single step of the way. He has been white-knuckling survival ever since he was a small child, and he's never once lost his ability to hope that things could potentially be better, and will eventually become better. His mother was the one that instilled this hope within him, and there's some piece of him that feels that it is the only part of her that is left in this ugly, awful world.
Even after losing everything to one job gone awry, V keeps his foolish hope that he might be able to reverse the damage from both the relic and dying, and he even lends himself to the hope that both he and Johnny might be able to live. It is only after Alt crushes the last of his hope that he gives up and finds a way to kill himself without feeling like a coward.
- Your character gets to return home, but when they do they learn that they've been gone for hundreds of years. How do they react?
While it would obviously very heavily depend on what the state of the world actually is, he would most likely build a new life (as long as the world is recognizable). He would be hurt and rather than grieve, he would harden his heart. He would refuse to face his grief and bottle it away like he does everything else; he would drown out the pain with more drugs and booze and sex. He would learn the rules of this new age, and he would do whatever it took to survive.
As long as everyone he knew was dead, he'd find a way to harden his heart and carry on as if nothing was wrong. He'd always been a survivor, and he would absolutely figure out how to survive in a world that he barely recognizes. As long as he can play the game that Night City constructed, he'll find a way, and he'll find it alone. If the relic kicked back in on his arrival back home, he'd even search for a way to fix his broken head with whatever new technologies were available.
cw: suicide
The more interesting question is what would happen to V after the events of Phantom Liberty if the NUSA saved him. In that ending it is discovered that V was in a coma for 4 years, and everyone moved on with their lives believing that V was dead. The only person who is there to give him comfort is Misty, and she's on her way to catch a bus to leave the city forever. In that ending, V is so incredibly hurt by the fact that everyone he loved moved on and seemed to no longer think of him that he almost can't even breathe. This coupled with the fact that he can no longer have cyberware and work ultimately would lead him to killing himself before the end of his first week back in Night City.
